Course introduction

Course objective: To learn about insurance issues concerning home businesses.

Though more than 50 million Americans operating a business from home, most Homeowner's Policies do not cover business-related losses and liability.

In most standard policies, business equipment on the premises is only covered for up to $2500 and equipment away from the home is covered only up to $250. That's where the protection begins and ends.

But what if...
  • A client is injured in your home?
  • Your laptop is stolen in the airport?
  • Your home office is destroyed by a fire leaving you without records to collect accounts receivable?

If you are insured exclusively by a typical Homeowner's Policy, you probably have no protection against these business losses and liabilities.

In this course, you will learn about home businesses and insurance through the following topics:
  • Who is insured
  • The dwelling and other structures
  • Business personal property
  • Zoning and building ordinance considerations
  • Liability issues
  • Policies
